At the beginning of the year I finished my apprenticeship at Hassia and immediately got a great opportunity to gain experience abroad. As my first assembly assignment as a young skilled worker at Hassia I had the chance to go to America.
After I had made all the preparation work together with the company, I took the plane on April 26th. After a flight of more than 8 hours, I arrived in Boston, where my American colleague picked me up from the airport. Now the work could begin!
My job consisted of rebuilding work on six machines and was about 4 weeks. During that time I’ve worked with a lot of different people. The local American colleagues were very friendly and helpful, which was a great help to me as this was my first time abroad by myself. At lunchtime there was warm food in the company, which of course was all XXL – haha.
But the colleagues not only took care about me during work. Even in the evenings, when the work was done, we often went out for dinner, had a barbecue and spent the time doing sports and games. So I was welcomed on a very friendly basis and was not alone in a country so far away on the other side of the globe.
A highlight for me was when we went to Plymouth for a weekend. It’s a beautiful place at the ocean side. On the last day of my stay I got a city tour through Boston, which was very impressive.
In conclusion, I can say that I am glad to have taken the chance. It was a very nice and interesting time in America and I got to know a lot of new people.
